The BEST sugar cookies (and friends!)

This afternoon a few of my friends came to my house to make cookies. Not just any sugar cookies, but the very best sugar cookies in the whole wide world. My grandma found this recipe from a newspaper when she was young and we've been using it ever since. Now it's copied inside our cookbook. These cookies are legendary, and I've been making them all my life. Literally.
Onto the recipe of ages!
Ingredients for the cookies:
  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1.5 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1 cup room temperature butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Ingredients for the icing:
  • Sifted powdered sugar
  • Water
  • A splash of vanilla
Step one- cream the butter and the sugar
Step two- add the egg, vanilla, and almond to the creamed mixture
Step 3- In another bowl mix the flour, cream of tartar, and the baking soda
Step 4- Slowly mix the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture until it is of a doughy consistency
Step 5- Cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours. I refrigerated mine overnight and it was all kinds of perfect.
Step 6- Roll and cut out the cookies, and preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 7- Bake for 8-10 minutes.
Step 8- Mix the icing ingredients. Mix the water and sugar until you have your favored consistency. Once you are satisfied throw in a dash of vanilla and food coloring until it is tinted to your delight.
Step 9- Decorate!

Alex used this nice drizzle technique on her cookies.

Daphne's cookie and apron match!

Yum!
I got to use my new stegosaurus cookie cutter for the first time!

These cookies are simply wonderful. They are sweet and light. The icing dries sweet and oozy with a bit of a crust, and makes the cookies a little softer. These are wonderful at Christmas time, or in the middle of June. You can't lose with this fine recipe.

After we baked, decorated, and ate our cookies we decided to hang around in our ENOs, and it was fantastic.
Such a fun afternoon filled with wonderful people and cookies!
