The story of my spirograph(s)

This last week has been a little busy. I had a test in my AP human geography class on Friday, so I was studying quite a bit. On Thursday night I was rummaging around looking for something (popsicle sticks? duct tape? I don't remember) But I ended up finding this gem
and so I took a break to play around with it. I filled up a whole page in my notebook pretty quickly
and of course my faithful cocker spaniel, Gracie, had to get in on the act.

Me being me, I was instantly super obsessed. I'm either utterly obsessed or completely uninterested. There is no in between. So I threw the set in my backpack hoping for an opportunity to tinker with it some more. My opportunity came during biomed while we were uploading Java to our laptops. I pulled it out and 3 girls who sit around me were interested. I dispersed the pieces and we all had fun. I felt like a 5 year old sharing my toys :) One girl also became obsessed with it and asked where I got it, but it was a Christmas gift from 2 years ago (which I had ignorantly ignored), so I wasn't really sure. Fast forward about 3 hours. I was Dollar Tree in the craft section looking for popsicle sticks, and I was thinking about my spirograph set and my friends who liked it. I kid you not, I thought 'How cool would it be if this store had a set and I could buy one for all 3 of my friends' and BOOM I look down and there sits a cardboard box of cheap, knock off spirograph sets.  I might have done a little happy dance. I bought 4, and I can't wait to give them away on Tuesday. Friday night I watched Holes on Netflix and made some more fancy things with both the spirograph sets I own.
The new set from the dollar store was larger then my original set, so there was a little bit of a learning curve.

I was really happy with my results from using my fine tip sharpies, so up went the finished product onto the inspiration board.
Saturday evening after seeing Paddington with friends we headed to tarjay, where I purchased this beauty. It's a name brand spirograph kit! I'm on cloud nine. I didn't even think they carried them in store (they don't carry popsicle sticks either, what has society digressed to?!?) and I was so excited. I I felt like a little kid carrying my boxed toy to the cash register. When I arrived home I watched the first half of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (also on Netflix) and made these with my new purchase
I really like how this one isn't all circular.

The orange pen is so vibrant, and this shape makes me think of a peeled clementine. Speaking of oranges, get your vitamin C my friends, flu season is upon us.

This one was a horrid combination of mistakes.

I used the fancy bar piece and 2 different circles (one significantly larger than the other) to achieve this effect.

Thanks for letting me show off a bit! Hope I inspired you to get find yourself one of these magical sets. Have a good week, stay healthy, and be on the lookout for new posts. Bye!

  1. So weird! A couple of weeks ago I too found a mini spirograph exactly like yours...also at The Dollar Tree, I quickly gathered up 6 of them to give as gifts. I'm part of an art journaling group on Facebook and I had used mine to make a flower to us in my journal and I was looking for a picture of the mini spirograph and came upon your post! Very cool!
