Upcycled ASL artsyness

Today while organizing my closet I found this limp, stray glove that does not fit. I wouldn't dare to throw it away, but I wasn't sure what to do with it. I thought of making a little stuffed bear out of it, but that seemed a bit dull. After throwing the bear idea out the theoretical window I stumbled upon a stroke of total and complete genius. Why not make and American Sign Language sign out of it? And so that's what I did!

This, my friends, is ASL for "I really love you" and I think it's pretty fun. I am planning to take ASL next year. ASL is a very unique way of communicating, and I maintain a high degree of respect for those who are fluent.
On to the tutorial!

Stuff your glove nice and evenly. I put more in than I needed and massaged it around until it looked more natural. I also slid a drinking straw up the far side of the pinkey finger to keep it perpendicular to the horizontal plane.
To allow the glove to sit upright we need to create a base. I used glass marbles to allow it to be mailable. So to give them a pouch to rest in I sewed a scrap into the bottom, following the curvature of the cuff (meaning, do not sew in a straight line, but around the circle).

Now plop the marbles in there and whip stitch it close.

See? Now it sits up all on it's own!

Now comes the fun part. Sew the stuffed glove into your desired sign, whatever it may be.

DO NOT DO THIS; I spray painted mine, but that was stupid and it ended up looking like lichen, so I ended up shaving all the green hairy bits. This was a total waste of time. Avoid this.

At this point all that is left is to paint it. I applied multiple coats of paint to get it thoroughly covered.

And, boom! You are done! Looks great, doesn't it?

I love how it looks on this wall!

Thanks for stopping in! Have a pleasant weekend!
